Dear Friends,

Welcome back to Uplifting News!

In this edition, we have two big wins on the international front, one for those in the air and one for those in the sea:

 The High Seas Treaty

This treaty went into force yesterday and is now officially international law. Decades in the making, this agreement marks a new era of international cooperation for stewardship and protection of the ocean.

The high seas are the vast, shared international waters that lie beyond any single country’s jurisdiction. Accounting for two-thirds of the ocean and home to 10 million species, they are critical migration corridors for whales, tuna, and many others.

While much work lies ahead, including the creation of Marine Protected Areas (MPAs), the treaty is a landmark win for the ocean and those who call it home. Learn more at Highseasalliance.org

The African-Eurasian Flyway Initiative

BirdLife International and The World Bank have joined forces to launch a historic initiative for conservation of the African-Eurasian Flyway. This incredible migratory superhighway links Africa, Europe and Asia. Extending from the Arctic tundra to the tip of southern Africa, the Flyway is used by more than 2 billion migratory birds and 500 bird species.

The new program will provide billions of dollars for conservation and restoration of critical resting places, stopovers, feeding grounds and nesting locations, benefitting not only birds but also local communities. Learn more at Birdlife.org

Rewilding Success Stories

Nature and ecosystems have an amazing ability to bounce back when given a chance. Here are two recent examples:

Just one year after the Klamath River was freed from dams, thousands of Chinook salmon pushed deep into newly reopened habitat, some reaching more than 360 miles from the ocean for the first time in over a century! What’s more, as a result of the colder river temperatures, water quality for people and wildlife has improved due to dramatic decreases in harmful algae blooms.

White Storks have returned to breed in the UK for the first time since 1416! These majestic birds travel 12,000 miles every year from southern Africa to Northern Europe along the (you guessed it) African-Eurasian Flyway. Click the link below to watch a highlights video from the live “Stork Cam” -- I guarantee you will find it touching as you watch the parents raise their young family!
